Helmut Marko has admitted that he does not know where rumours of Pierre Gasly joining Alpine came from, describing the Frenchman as a “great fit” for AlphaTauri.
Gasly has been mighty impressive since losing his Red Bull drive midway through the 2019 season, securing two podiums and a race win, including a third-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend.
The 25-year-old’s form has prompted talk that he could be set for a move away from the Red Bull programme, but Marko insisted that he was the “ideal ambassador for AlphaTauri”.
“With AlphaTauri, the package fits perfectly,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. “The combination is a great fit.
“We still have a contract that goes for two more years. I don’t know where the talk about Alpine came from again.
“Pierre is the ideal ambassador for AlphaTauri as the slightly fashionable Frenchman. But what is strong is his performance in the car. He lost power in the race in Baku. The fact he kept Leclerc behind him was quite a great performance.”
While Gasly has continued to impress, Sergio Perez secured his first victory as a Red Bull driver at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Perez’s form puts Red Bull in a better position than they have been in since the departure of Daniel Ricciardo in 2018, with Marko arguing that the team was now in a great spot in terms of driver depth in the lower categories too.
“We have a great pool of drivers,” he added.
“It has been written that we don’t have any new blood. Vips wins at will in Formula 2 when the car holds up. Lawson is absolutely up there. You can only push him back with 10-second penalties.
“So there’s a lot of talent coming from our own ranks who want to drive the Red Bull.”
