Vettel: We want to maintain our momentum in Baku

Sebastian Vettel is keen to build on his best result yet in Aston Martin colours with a strong showing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend.

The German was impressive throughout the weekend in Monaco, qualifying eighth performing executing an overcut strategy to finish fifth in the Grand Prix.

The P5 result was his first points finish of the season and saw him jump ahead of teammate in the drivers’ championship up into 11th.

With five races now under his belt in the AMR21, Vettel appeared more confident while looking ahead to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, stating that he wants to maintain his “momentum” at the Baku City Circuit.

“From Monaco, we travel to another street circuit, Baku,” he said. “But it’s a very different challenge.

“You can overtake in Baku, and tyre degradation is much more of a factor, so, while Saturday remains important, finding a good balance for the technical sectors and the high-speed sections, while performing a strong race strategy, will be key to a good result.

“We’re coming here off the back of a good weekend in Monaco, and we want to maintain our momentum.”

Stroll echoed Vettel in calling for the team to build on a strong result in Monaco, where he finished eighth, while also referencing his podium finish in Azerbaijan back in 2017.

“Baku is a place of special memories for me, it’s here that I scored my maiden podium in Formula 1,” he added.

“It’s a complex circuit as it combines flat-out sections with tight corners in the middle sector, making the margin for error minuscule.

“We are continually progressing with our AMR21 and intend on building on our momentum from Monaco.”

Free practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix gets underway at 12:30pm local time on Friday.
