Jos: Time for Red Bull to produce a championship-winning car

While Red Bull digest the bombshell news that Honda will depart Formula 1 at the end of 2021, they are also facing increasing impatience from the Max Verstappen camp who desperately want the Dutchman to have a car capable of challenging for the title.

His father, Jos Verstappen, told De Telegraaf that it is high time that Red Bull delivered a car his lad can go to war amid the sudden uncertain future, “We’re just waiting and see what will happen.”

“A lot has been said by a lot of people outside of Red Bull but that has no value to us. It’s time for Red Bull to produce a championship-winning car. If Max has a competitive car in 2021, nobody has to be worried about anything. That’s the goal, to become world champion,” added Jos. (Dutch Translation: MsportXtra)

At 23, Max is the hottest property in Formula 1 with a huge future ahead of him. While speculation swirls about his contract, the truth is that when a big-name driver wants to leave a team they tend to do so with or without a contract, as money always talks at that level.

Furthermore, even in the Red Bull-pen, there is confusion with team principal Christian Horner claiming that there is no performance clause in Max’s contract while (his boss?) Helmut Marko has been saying the opposite for some time.

Jos’ comments could well be the first move in a game of chess between the Verstappen – whose deal runs until the end of 2023 – and Red Bull until an engine deal is finalised. Watch this space!
