Racing Point hire Jefferson Slack as marketing chief

Jefferson Slack, a former marketing manager for Michael Jordan and CEO of Inter Milan has been hired by Racing Point as the team charges ahead with its mission to become one of the biggest teams Formula 1.

Set to become Aston Martin’s works team next year, the Silverstone outfit, owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, has issued a clear signal of intent with the signing of Slack to the newly-created role of Managing Director for Commercial and Marketing.

Possessing a glittering resume across 30 years in the sports industry, Slack worked with Jordan when he was the most famous man in the world in the 1990s, helping the basketball superstar reach commercial heights never scaled before by an athlete, before joining Inter Milan as the football club’s first American CEO. He also has extensive agency experience with industry titans Wasserman and IMG, and has acted as a commercial advisor for Dorna, the rights holders for MotoGP.

Announcing the move on Monday, Stroll explained it was part of his team’s attempt to capitalise on the “unique opportunity” that awaits them with the Aston Martin rebrand.

“With the progress we have made this season on the track and with our upcoming relaunch as Aston Martin F1 Team, we have a unique opportunity to create an iconic new sports property that’s at the forefront of Formula 1,” he said in a statement. “We are delighted to appoint Jefferson Slack to help us realise the full global commercial and marketing opportunities that lie ahead.”

Racing Point CEO and team principal Otmar Szafnauer echoed Stroll’s sentiments.

“I am delighted that Jefferson is joining us in the newly created role of Managing Director. He will be responsible for leading all our commercial and marketing activities as we look to build one of F1’s most successful teams, both on and off the track.”

Slack himself added it was “one of the most exciting commercial opportunities, not just in Formula 1, but in the whole of the sports industry.

“We are looking to build an iconic new sports brand in Aston Martin F1 Team, and in the process we believe we will create a unique global marketing platform for other brands and partners.

“I am looking forward to working with Lawrence and Otmar, and building a world-class commercial and marketing team.”
