Could the Spanish Grand Prix Return to Jerez?

Formula 1 could return to Jerez as early as the 2021 season, according to a Spanish MP.

Speaking to Spanish Media, Juan Marin, a member of parliament in Andalusia, confirmed talks are underway with Liberty Media to bring an F1 race back to the circuit for the first time since 1997.

“I cannot say anything yet, some say that it is done, but for my part until I see the signature on the contract I will not announce anything.” he said.

“Negotiations are still underway and an announcement is expected to be made in May or June. Formula 1 interests us a lot, in Jerez as in Andalusia. But there are other countries interested. It is also a very high investment and work would be necessary on the circuit.”

Currently Jerez only serves as an occasional testing venue for F1 teams, while the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya plays host to the Spanish GP. However, with its contract up after the 2020 edition, Marin is hoping the Andalusian circuit’s various supporters can make a pitch that will be persuasive enough to move locations.

“Other parties are participating in the negotiations, there is not only the Andalusian government. In this sense, we continue to negotiate, and we work with the municipal council of Jerez, but I cannot say that there is something definitively closed.”
