Perez: It’s a Big Year Coming Up for Us

The 2020 Formula 1 season will see significant improvement from Racing Point, according to the team’s driver, Sergio Perez.

Speaking in an interview with Autosport, the 29-year-old Mexican suggested his team’s 2019 campaign had been hamstrung by their previous financial difficulties, and 2020 would be the first opportunity for the new administration under owner Lawrence Stroll to really make an impact.

“There is very big, huge potential in this team,” said Perez. “I think this year we should be able to see it.”

Slipping from fifth in 2018 (when combining the scores of the two Force India outfits) to seventh in 2019, the newly-branded Racing Point was unable to keep-up their impressive run of results since the 2015 season, but Perez maintains the capabilities of the team at the factory will be able to shine once more.

“I don’t think there is a team that can grow as much as this one already for this year, and [the new regulations in] 2021 is a big opportunity for us to mix with the big boys.

“Last season, the way I see this, we kind of expected to have a bit of a setback.

“I think it’s is a big year coming up for us because it’s absolutely the first year where we will see the new administration of the team get into play.”

Perez’s teammate Lance Stroll also echoed his sentiments.

“If I look back on last year, we came into the season with some struggles because of where we were this time last year and the troubles that the team had and that really delayed the process of development.

“So if I look at where we stand now and going into next year, definitely we got a head start on where we were this time last year [in 2018], so that really does excite me.”
