Maverick former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan has added fuel to the Lewis Hamilton-to-Ferrari fever by claiming that Mercedes’ six-time World Champion is heading to Maranello and taking his boss Toto Wolff with him in 2021.
Jordan whose eponymous Grand Prix team competed in the top flight from 1991 to 2005 before it was sold on several times to become Racing Point which it is these days.
The Irishman, once dubbed “F1’s village idiot” by fellow team boss Ron Dennis, apparently still is privy to wheeling-and-dealing in the paddock often referred to as a pool of piranhas. Although it must be noted
It should be noted that despite some hit-and-misses in the past, Jordan has also ‘broken’ some major stories in the past, including Michael Schumacher coming out of retirement for Mercedes in 2010 as well as Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes before anyone knew about these developments. There were other spot on predictions along the way.
But also some missed the mark such as his prediction that Volkswagen would buy Red Bull, and most recently (2018) that Mercedes are looking to sell their F1 operation…
He has now tapped up his contacts (or imagination) for his latest on the Silver Arrows, and updated Top Gear with his ‘inside’ information, “It would be the right time for Lewis to go to Ferrari [in 2021]. He’s coming to the end of his career, but he still wants to win his seven or more titles.
“But the real belief that I think Lewis will go to Ferrari in 2021 is that Toto Wolff’s contract expires at the end of next year. He knows Mercedes’ long-term future in Formula 1 is not a certainty. Indeed, Lewis has mentioned Toto’s contract on more than one occasion, which is unusual for an F1 driver to do.
“Lewis would only go to Ferrari if someone could protect him against any possibility that Charles Leclerc could usurp him. So Ferrari would bring Toto along too.”
Ferrari have identified Charles Leclerc to lead the team into the future with four-time F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel in the sister car to create a formidable partnership on paper led by inexperienced team boss Mattia Binotto arguably doing a role too many for the Scuderia.
But Jordan is not convinced by the current state of affairs at the Italian team, “What they don’t have is that person on the pit wall to guide the team, in terms of how they structure the race strategy. Toto knows that. Racing is in his blood, and he’d love to have a name like Ferrari on his CV too.
“I’m absolutely certain that in 2021, Lewis Hamilton will move to Ferrari. Toto goes with him, because as I said, Lewis won’t leave himself exposed, and it will be his way of bringing an equaliser.
“Do Ferrari need two number ones? No, but they won’t let go of Leclerc,” argued Jordan and added, “Vettel will retire at the end of 2020. He can’t go back to Red Bull because he’d get creamed by Max Verstappen.
“However, if Mercedes did decide to stay on in F1, it might work for Vettel to go there; a consolation prize for losing Lewis. It would be a huge feather in Leclerc’s cap to potentially beat Hamilton in the same car. He has the potential to be a great,” predicted Jordan.
Big Question: How does Eddie know?
