Briatore: Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull for Alonso or no F1

Flavio Briatore has once again done some PR on behalf of his one-time protege Fernando Alonso by declaring (yet again) that the Spaniard will only return to Formula 1 if he gets an offer from a top-three team.

Alonso quit the sport last year, insisting he would rather take on challenges in sportscar racing, Indycar and off-road rallying than continue to race in the F1 midfield.

Briatore, who remains close to Alonso’s management, told Radio RAI, “Alonso? I spoke to him about it. Fernando will return only if he has a seat at Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull, otherwise it makes no sense.”

When asked if a return to Ferrari for Alonso is a possibility given the way they parted company four years ago, Briatore answered: “Everything is possible, if they want to win.”

He was also asked about Formula 2 driver Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher who Briatore claims to have “discovered” but did most certainly guide to two F1 world titles.

Briatore ventured, “Mick is a good driver, but not at his father’s level. I wish him all the best but I don’t think he can be compared to his father.”
