Rotenberg: We were unpleasantly surprised by Williams

SMP Racing chief Boris Rotenberg has hit out at Williams after Sergey Sirotkin was ditched by the Grove outfit in favour of Rober Kubica and George Russell leaving the Russian without a drive for next season.

Sirotkin is backed by SMP Racing spent a trying rookie season in the top flight with a woefully uncompetitive car, described as “evil” by team chief Claire Williams.

The team underdelivered on the investment by the Russian racing organisation, Rotenborg said in a statement, “We have decided not to continue our involvement in Formula 1.”

“We were unpleasantly surprised by the level at which the team was at the beginning of the season. The progress of the car was also not high enough.

“Despite this, Sergey spent a good season in the conditions in which he found himself, laid out at 100% and fully completed the tasks assigned to him.

“We are pleased with his work and are currently considering various options for continuing Sergey’s career. He will definitely spend a lot of races in the SMP Racing. We will announce our decision soon,” concluded Rotenborg.

Thus Sirotkin departs Formula 1 after a single season with one point to his name.
