Horner: I was being told they had to retire Ricciardo

Christian Horner was amazed by the performance delivered by Daniel Ricciardo on his way to victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Red Bull boss admitting that he was being told by his team that the lead car would have to be retired…

Instead, a masterful performance by Ricciardo turned what looked to be a race losing situation and victory at the sport’s most famous venue.

Over the radio, Horner could not curb his enthusiasm as his driver crossed the line, “Un-f*cking-believable. You have done an amazing job today. That is right up there with what Schumacher did in 1995 and this is payback for 2016.”

Horner added later, “They’re telling me on the intercom they’ll have to retire the car in one or two laps. I said: Look, we’re in the lead of the Monaco GP, we’re keeping going.”

“He was not going to give this race up this weekend. He’s been quickest in every session. We lose the MGU-K 17 or 18 laps into the race so he’s giving up two-and-a-half seconds a lap.

“Then your brake temperatures go out of control, the fuel and tyre temperatures start going. Yet he managed it like he was on a Sunday afternoon drive.”

“Moving the switches around, driving to save fuel, brakes, tyres, asking what’s going on with Max’s tyres. He drove an unbelievable race this weekend,” added Horner.
