Sebastian Vettel was a busy man on Tuesday as he lapped the Circuit de Catalunya more than any other driver, the Ferrari man ending the fifth day of Formula 1 preseason testing fastest of all to cap a good day back to work for the German and his team.
Vettel's best lap of 1:20.396 was exactly two-tenths quicker than the next best, set on Pirelli medium tyres bolted on to SF71-H. He did an impressive 171 laps in the process.
Valtteri Bottas was second in the Mercedes W09 after his morning stint in the cockpit. Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton took over in the afternoon and ended fourth fastest, the pair combining to rack up 177 laps during the course of the day. Both the Mercedes drivers used softs to set their best lap times.
Splitting the Silver Arrows duo on the timing screens was Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, his best time set on mediums was less than a tenth shy of Bottas.
The Dutchman's morning was fruitful, but his afternoon outing was interrupted by a Turn 1 stoppage that resulted in an hour lost as his team changed the battery on his car. He returned to the action 15 minutes before the flag to end the day with 130 laps to his name.
Pierre Gasly was fourth fastest in the Honda-powered Toro Rosso but a brake problem in the afternoon restricted the Frenchman to just 54 laps, which was substantially more than McLaren enjoyed, as Stoffel Vandoorne stopped out on track a couple of times with problems.
His running was reduced to a mere 38 laps (least of all on the day) and ending second from last. He used supersofts when setting his best lap time.
Kevin Magnussen enjoyed a solid day in the Haas VF18, with the sixth fastest time and 96 laps covered.
Up next on the timing screens were the Renault pair of Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz, seventh and eight respectively. Hulkenberg's best time a second down on the top time.
Williams also ran both their drivers with Sergey Sirotkin ending ninth with 42 laps to his credit, while Lance Stroll managed 86 laps albeit with the slowest time of the day.
Sergio Perez was ninth in the Force India ahead of Sauber's Marcus Ericcson who was tenth but managed 120 laps in the Sauber.
Testing continues on Wednesday at the venue and will run until the end of Friday.
