Wolff: Pascal definitely deserves a place in Formula 1

Pascal Wehrlein

Despite impressing in his first full season in Formula 1, Pascal Wehrlein is unlikely to make it on to the grid in 2018 but Mercedes chief Toto Wolff rates the young German highly and believes he will return at some point in the future while confirming he will remain with the Silver Arrows organisation.

Wolff said this week, “Pascal definitely deserves a place in Formula 1 and is certainly one of the fastest drivers. At the moment it looks a little bit bitter as far as the available [race] driver seats are concerned.

“But he’s definitely going to be on our team. [It is unclear] whether or not he actively participates in a racing series other than Formula 1. He will definitely remain part of our squad.”

It is not uncommon for drivers in the early stages of their career to drop out for a season, which in this case Wehrlein has no choice but 2019 could be an active year for driver deals.

One seat remains available for the 2018 Formula 1 season at Williams. Wehrlein was a candidate for a seat with the Mercedes powered outfit but since then Sergey Sirotkin is being tipped to get the drive.
