Daniel Ricciardo has been awarded the 2017 Overtaker of the Year thanks to his numerous streetwise exploits during the course of the season.
The big smiling Aussie proved to be a ruthless ‘assassin’ when it mattered on track, his ambush of rivals was something to behold. One example was his pouncing at Monza, from nowhere, to overtake Kimi Raikkonen – it was a move nothing short of astounding.
His unlikely victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was riveting stuff. An early pitstop for tyres and to remove debris hanging from his car was the prelude to a storming drive through the field to the top step of the podium. His overtake of three cars during the race is one of the major highlights of the year.
Clearly, readers believe that Red Bull have master overtakers in their line-up with Max Verstappen claiming the second most votes for his ability to get by his rivals.
2017 Awards Notes: The Grand Prix 247 Awards were determined by reader polls which began on 2 December and ran until 8 December. An average of 3000 votes were cast per category, around 42,000 votes were cast in total. Thank you to those who participated.
