Abu Dhabi FP2: Hamilton takes control

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have slugged it out for top honours on day one of free practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Ferrari drive fastest in the morning FP1 session and the Mercedes driver topping the timing screens in the evening FP2 at Yas Marina Circuit.

Hamilton was the only driver to dip below the 98 seconds mark with a best time of 1:37.877, o.149 of a second quicker than Vettel in second place.

Daniel Ricciardo, who spent the morning session testing parts on his Red Bull, was on the pace under floodlights setting the third best time, albeit three tenths down on the top time.

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen was fourth, a quarter of a second down on Vettel, followed by fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas in fifth, six tenths down on Hamilton.

Over a second adrift of the benchmark time was Max Verstappen in sixth at the wheel of the other Red Bull.

Best of the rest, in seventh, was Sergio Perez in the Force India, a mere one-hundredth of a second up on teammate Esteban Ocon who sat out FP1.

Nico Hulkenberg was ninth, fastest of the Renault powered drivers (not including the Red Bull duo) and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top ten in the McLaren.
