Daniil Kvyat

Kvyat also in contention for Williams drive

Daniil Kvyat

The ‘hottest’ available seat in Formula 1, for 2018, is still up for grabs at Williams and now Daniil Kvyat has been added to the list of possible drivers after the Russian was recently axed from the Red Bull programme.

Felipe Massa’s future with the team has been in doubt for a couple of months, the Brazilian has made it clear he is keen to remain with the team despite ‘retiring’ from the sport last year but instead remained to replace Mercedes bound Valtteri Bottas.

Massa’s 15th season in Formula 1 has hardly been stellar, indeed after the Mexican Grand Prix 19 year old rookie Lance Stroll has overtaken him in the drivers’ with two races remaining in the championship.

Williams have made no secret they are considering alternative drives and recently concluded private testing with Paul di Resta and Robert Kubica in Hungary.

Now, in the aftermath of Kvyat being shown the door by his long time employers, Williams technical chief Paddy Lowe revealed to reporters in Mexico, “As I said in Austin we will consider all drivers that are not contracted. That is a fact. Kvyat is a very respectable driver, so he should also be in the frame.”

Lowe added, “We are talking all the time to Felipe, and we will see where we get to with that. There are all sorts of scenarios. It’s something that we’re managing internally.”

“Relationships between teams and drivers around renewals is always tense, unfortunately. Most of us when we got and apply for a job, it’s done in private. In F1 it’s a very public affair, and that does make it more awkward than we’d like.”

“But Felipe’s a great guy, and he’s got a great relationship with Williams, it’s very respectful both ways. Whatever we conclude together, we’ll remain on good terms,” added Lowe.

Big Question: Would Daniil be a good for Williams?
