One would be forgiven being highly confused trying to work out the starting grid for the United States Grand Prix, amid a myriad of grid penalties handed out at Circuit of the Americas ahead of the race.
Only the top five drivers will start from the positions in which they qualified, the rest of the field will either be promoted or demoted on the grid.
Max Verstappen, Stoffel Vandoorne, Nico Hulkenberg and Brendon Hartley have all picked up a collection of grid penalties, while Lance Stroll and Kevin Magnussen incurred penalties for blocking during qualifying.
Toro Rosso debutant, WEC World Champion and Le Mans winner, Hartley will make his grand prix debut from last place on the grid due to his 25 place grid penalty. Without them he would have started from 15th.
Despite Stroll (16th) and Magnussen (18th) receiving three-place demotions, they actually gain one and two places respectively on the grid by virtue of the fact that Hulkenberg and Hartley received larger engine related penalties.
Confused? So are we!
