Vettel: Last year was a very good year for us

Sebastian Vettel believes the success that Ferrari are having this season, with two wins from three races, is all down to the foundation which was laid down last year and the German heralds 2016 a good year for the team despite a victory drought.

Speaking to ESPN ahead of the Russian Grand Prix weekend, Vettel explained, “Obviously we did a massive stint over the winter. I think last year was a very good year for us. It wasn’t good in terms of results, don’t get me wrong, but I think for the team, getting together, a lot of things that had changed seemed to start clicking.”

The SF70-H has been good from day one which the four times F1 World Champion acknowledges, “It helps when straight from the box, in testing, we had a good feeling. We looked reasonably competitive.”

“Australia [victory] obviously was a massive boost for all the team and you can see that when they are singing down there [in front of the podium]. The whole factory has really come alive so that’s great and we need to just make sure we keep it going and keep enjoying it.”

“But for now, I think the team has obviously done a really, really great job, a lot of hard work, commitment and as I said, things start to click and hopefully that sort of success now in the first couple of races helps us to build up some sort of momentum,” added Vettel who leads the championship after three rounds.

Last year there was talk that Ferrari were in turmoil, reports emerging that staff were operating in “a climate of fear”, which the team denied. The situation prompted Maurizio Arrivabene to impose an information blackout with information regarding the team from Maranello which still remains to a certain extent.

Whatever the case, the team regrouped and under the direction of technical chief Mattia Binotto appears to be well balanced and focused on the task at hand, namely seriously vying for the world title and intent on toppling the might of Mercedes.

Binotto said recently, “We are many people in Ferrari. Each of us has his role which is an important role — there is not one more important or less important in the team.”

“What we’ve done since July, I think… it’s a great team with great engineers. It’s simply making sure that everybody was delivering, being accountable, feeling accountable and getting the right team spirit,” added Binotto.
