Manor rookie Esteban Ocon will start the Brazilian Grand Prix from back of the grid for impeding Renault driver Jolyon Palmer during qualifying at Interlagos.

Ocon was investigated after the incident in Q1, where he was behind Pascal Wehrlein but ahead of both Sauber drivers on the timing screens.

However the FIA race stewards found that Ocon blocked Palmer in Turn 4, which the Frenchman admits was due to a breakdown in communication with his engineer on the the Manor pit gantry.

Ocoan said, “The team did not tell me Palmer was coming. I saw him at the last moment and I could not move at that point because it would have been dangerous. I was not aware he was there, so that was clear. The penalty was deserved.”

“We were discussing if we could do another lap, so the team was busy checking that and they didn’t check that Palmer was coming.”

Ocon was also given two penalty points on his licence and he now has four to his name. Accumulating 12 points in a 12-month period will result in an automatic one-race ban.
