Big smiling Aussie Daniel Ricciardo cemented himself as a superstar of Formula 1 with a superb season which saw him not only finish third in the world championship, but also destroy his illustrious teammate while racking up his first grand prix win and a couple more to boot.
Furthermore Ricciardo enhanced his reputation with some of the best overtake moves of the season. In wheel-to-wheel situations he is already up there with the very best. He was ruthless in Hungary where he scythed past the sports acknowledged masters – Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton – with amazing tenacity, meticulous precision and calculated aggression.
Quadruple F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel was comprehensively beaten in just about every situation by his new teammate, justifying Red Bull’s belief in Ricciardo who is now the de facto leader of the energy drinks owned outfit as Vettel moves on to Ferrari with his tale between his legs.
Prior to his glorious 2014 season there were some who doubted Ricciardo’s character – nice guys don’t tend to make it very far in Formula 1 – needless to say he defied the critics and his podium celebrations were sheer a pleasure to watch.
The chap from Perth is a true racer who rises to the occasion, and when he climbs out of the cockpit oozes the joy of being a grand prix driver – living the dream and taking us along with him on the journey. Racing is in his blood.
