The future of Jenson Button is becoming an increasingly hot topic as the Formula 1 silly season simmers, with McLaren not yet committing to any sort of 2015 driver line-up announcement.
It is known in the paddock that Ron Dennis has targeted Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and even Lewis Hamilton to lead the team into their Honda-powered future, however it is unlikely that any of the trio will be available to join the Woking squad in 2015 as contracts are in place committing them to their current teams at least until 2016.
However McLaren are keeping their options open and when asked, by journalists, about Button’s future with the team, Sporting Director Eric Boullier replied, “It’s a question that I cannot say yes and I cannot say no to. We are evaluating or assessing every strategy for the future, and we are lucky to have two drivers who want to commit to us for the future.”
He added, “We have some options that we can take up, so we are not worried about next year or about, let’s say, the future driver line-up.”
Button is set to compete in his 256th grand prix at Silverstone next weekend, and already some elements in the British media are suggesting that it may be his last F1 home race. (GP247)
