Toro Rosso duo seek better qualifying performance

On paper the Toro Rosso STR8 is a handy piece of kit, but as yet the team’s drivers Jean Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo have not maximised the potential of their Red Bull backed car largely because their qualifying performance has not been up to scratch.

Vergne explained, “The pace of the car is encouraging. I had the fourth fastest time in Malaysia. Yes, it was set on fresh options and light tanks but it’s the same for everyone at that stage, so the performance is definitely in the car.”

“I think we don’t necessarily maximise the performance on Fridays or in qualifying, so that’s where the improvements need to come,” said Vergne.

Teammate Ricciardo has yet to score a point this season, and also suggests that qualifying is an area that needs to be improved.

Ricciardo said, “I think we’ll be fighting for points because the race pace has been fine, but it would be nice to be starting higher up the grid.”

The Australian pointed out, “We need to get the flow of the weekend a bit better, get back in the groove. There’s a lot of work for us to do but everyone wants to make it happen and believes that we can – so there’ll be a massive amount of effort going in the factory between now and China.”

“Two races down and no points on the board. It’s not really the start I’d hoped for but there are plenty of positives,” admitted Ricciardo. (GP247)
