Sebastian Vettel fastest of the Renault powered drivers at Silverstone

Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel put his Renault-powered RB10 into second place on the grid for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix, the 50th hosted at Silverstone . The reigning world champion qualified on the front row following an exciting session with rapidly changing weather conditions.

Four Renault-powered cars will also start from in the top ten for tomorrow’s race : Daniel Ricciardo put the sister Red Bull into eighth, with the two Scuderia Toro Rossos lining up ninth and tenth.

Q1: After heavy morning rain the track had dried sufficiently to be ‘Inter’ conditions at the start. A dry line emerged at the tail end of the session and the two Ferraris and Williams attempted laps with the dry tyres. A combination of yellow flags and light rain however conspired to eliminate all four drivers, along with the two Caterhams. Kamui Kobayashi had lost his ERS system on his second run and a glitch shut down the car on track on his third. Marcus Ericsson had a couple of offs and was not able to take advantage of the conditions. Marcus will start 21st and Kamui 22nd.

Q2: As the track dried the times came down. Lotus F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean was the fastest of the drivers to be eliminated in this session, qualifying in 11th. Team-mate Pastor Maldonado will start 15th after pulling up on track with a fuel pressure issue. Also out in the session were the two Marussias, who qualified in 12th and 13th, and both Saubers.

Q3: Sebastian Vettel had held provisional pole position until the dying seconds of Qualifying when conditions improved dramatically and Nico Rosberg was just able to snatch the position away. Daniel Ricciardo had held fourth but was pushed down the order to eighth as the times tumbled. The Australian will start ahead of the two Toro Rossos, who had waited in the garage until late in the session and were unable to find track position.
