Marussia Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi has been attacked and mugged near the famous Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Le Parisien reports that while Bianchi, in Paris for a television appearance, stood outside the luxury Pershing hotel smoking a cigarette before midnight, three assailants attacked him.

Bianchi, 24, was reportedly knocked to the ground and held down while his watch was removed.

The newspaper said the watch stolen was a model by Richard Mille, the luxury Swiss brand, worth €70,000. Bianchi filed a report with the police. (GMM)

So I guess we know know who the mysterious smoking F1 Driver is…. And we all assumed it was Kimi!

  • =El Presidente=

I guess now we know that drivers just don’t smoke in front of cameras because of propaganda.

    Even F1-drivers smoke! yeah!

  • Hugo Lafreniere

As a top-level athlete, he shouldn’t smoke. So maybe now this will give him another reason to quit. And having a 70K£ watch in a team like Marussia? Sell the watch, give the money to team (whi can definitely use it) and get a Timex.

  • karlich

So it’s not okay for him to smoke, but it is for Wlliams F1 to sport the colours of a major brand of alcohol? In a automotive sports event none the less! Urm…

If he isn’t a chain smoker, it’s no worse than Kimi’s boozing binges. A little Huntism won’t hurt them or us. And it’s okay for Williams F1 to sport the Martini colours… they look awesome!

As for the watch – good taste, lasting investment, valued gift or all three?

  • karlich

Ah the dangers of banning smoking inside public buildings!

  • Tamburello1994

Are we sure it was Tobacco?

  • Hugo Lafreniere

Smoking is pretty bad for your cardio-vascular system and your endurance. Having a glass of Martini vermouth is not. Even if Williams was still sponsored by Rothmans, no one is forcing the team or its fans to smoke. Mercedes is sponsored by Petronas. Doesn’t mean I’ll buy my fuel there and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m gonna inhale fumes from a liter of their fuel either. The title sponsor has no relevance whatsoever as to whether or not it’s okay for an athlete to indulge in something that’s potentitally detrimental to his health and, therefore his performance.

  • karlich

Plenty former F1 champs and non-champs smoked. Some even drank right before races. And then some are said to have even indulged in more. It’s his choice ;-)

Sad to hear this news, and glad he’s ok … but …
I thought Bianchi was doing his best to land a top drive, whether in Ferrari or it’s rivals, but I guess I thought wrong.
And yeah, if we are discussing whether or not smoking is bad for F1 drivers, then by all means we should be discussing legalizing drugs for the average person … F1 will be changing our lives then … literally :-))

I’m a former chain smoker and I agree that smoking is bad for a person. That being said. You are spot on with the comment about former world champs smoking and drinking. If he can still perform then there you go. Also, Hugo, having a sponsor that you yourself would not agree with is very hypocritical. You are right, no one is forcing anyone to drink or smoke. But still.

  • ianchesterton

    LOL.

Many people smoke. Sure it’s bad for you. But some still do it. I smoked heavy for many years. Especially when in war and I had no idea if i were going to make it till the next day. Seen quite a few Special Forces guys from many countries militaries smoke also. Yup, it will kill you. What won’t these days. This guy does have youth on his side when it comes to his health and performance.

  • =El Presidente=

i must admit that it did surprise me, i don’t have any problem with it, i just figured it could not be done at that level of sports.., it would give you a disadvantage, on the other hand maybe F1-racing is not as intensive anymore physically these days, and smoking (bianchi), and boozing (kimi) don’t really make a diff. :)

  • =El Presidente=

    Kudo’s for “Huntism” :D
