Hamilton and Rosberg disagree over Massa’s move to Williams

Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are split over whether Felipe Massa’s move to Williams is a boost to the departing Ferrari driver’s career.

Hamilton, the 2008 World Champion, likened Massa’s move after a long stint with Ferrari to his own decision to leave McLaren and join Mercedes this year.

“It’s a great opportunity for Felipe,” said the Briton, who was almost beaten to his title by Massa in a thrilling Interlagos finale five years ago.

“He was at Ferrari for a very long time,” Hamilton is quoted by Brazil’s Globo.

“And that is good in some ways, but going somewhere else – trying something new and working with new people – will be refreshing for him. It will be like fresh air for him, as it was for me,” he added.

“And [Williams] will have a good [Mercedes] engine next year,” Hamilton continued. “So I think it could be a turning point for him.”

Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, however, has a slightly different view. Before joining Mercedes in 2010, Rosberg began his career at Oxfordshire based Williams, where he drove for four years.

“I think it will be quite difficult for him,” the German said. “To leave a team like Ferrari, where everything is possible, to go to Williams, he will find that everything is much more limited.”

“It will be difficult for him to adapt to being in a smaller team,” he added. (GMM)

Massa must have brought a lot of sponsors to Williams as they don’t like to pay for drivers! Part of the demise of Williams has been that they wouldn’t pay for a top driver and instead believed that the car was sufficient to get anybody to a WDC.

To be fair, this worked when they had the Renault engine and Damon Hill or Jacques Villeneuve. However, they don’t have the power advantage any longer.

I suspect that Rosberg’s experience of Williams will be one which Massa experiences too.

Yeah.. Williams have always treated drivers like crap. Mansell was ousted over a non issue after winning the 92 wdc. They wouldnt pay Damon what he was worth in 96 because he was a test driver and sacked him in 97. Even of late sacking bruno senna after just one year eventhough he was lightyears better racer than maldonado. Williams is just elitist, they think they are better than everyone else.

“Williams is just elitist, they think they are better than everyone else.”

I think that they are quite well aware about what they are capable of doing. They do have a small budget so they cannot afford to pay drivers a lot now. Perhaps they were elitist when Newey was there. They knew they’d have the best car year after year, so the drivers weren’t that important to them! But now, I am sure they know they are a midfield team and nothing more than that!

I think Massa has a high level of experience and is quite able to give more feedback than most about were the car is on track we all know Alonslow gets Massa to do all the hard work testing parts and setup that is why Frank liked Rubens he was amazed by the knowledge and input Rubens could give but then he let Rubens go to run Senna and the Psycho.
Massa will do well in my opinion!

i am 70:30 for Lewis. Whereas Lewis is looking at Massa the person, Nico is looking at the teams. If it were a few years agoNico would have had a point.

Lewis wishing bright future for Felipe… 5 years after he made 1000 BJ’s to Timo Glock to win wdc.

Midfield small team or not Bottas proved last Sunday that Williams have something, maybe this new challenge for Massa will bring success so I don’t agree with Mr Rosberg just as I didn’t agree with him at Monaco, got pole position then parked the bus, held up the whole field then jumped about on the podium like he had won something
