Montezemolo: Alonso gets a good 8 out of 10 for this season

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has given Fernando Alonso a score of ‘eight out of ten’ for the 2013 Formula 1 season.

While the Italian team is struggling to hold third position in the Constructors’ Championship, and Felipe Massa is just eighth in the drivers’ standings, Alonso last weekend sealed the runner-up spot behind Sebastian Vettel.

Asked to rank Alonso’s season, president Montezemolo told CNN: “A good eight out of ten. I think he’s really a very, very good driver.”

Montezemolo insisted that he is not making excuses, but he said that Ferrari “paid a big price” for Pirelli’s mid-season tyre specification switch.

He is also happy that Formula 1’s rules are changing radically for 2014.

“I am very happy to change rules, because I don’t like formulas where aerodynamics make [up] 90 per cent of the performance,” said di Montezemolo.

Probably giving Alonso a higher ranking than 8 is Ferrari’s team principal Stefano Domenicali, who said the Maranello team “owes him a lot”.

“And next year, we must do all we can to provide him and Kimi with what they need to win.”

Alonso said this week: “I am proud, because we clearly do not have the second fastest car. So finishing second is a great reward for me.”

However, the Spaniard has had a somewhat fraught relationship with Ferrari this year, amid critical comments and reports claming that he toyed with moves to Red Bull and McLaren.

Nevertheless he has publicly remained committed to his Maranello employers, and ahead of the next season Alonso has admitted that he is worried that even the radical new rules next year, which many believe will be a clean slate for the pecking order, will not stop Red Bull’s dominance.

“Red Bull has a one second [per lap] advantage,” Alonso is quoted by the BBC, “so they can put whatever exhaust blowing or engine in their car and they are still on pole.”

Di Montezemolo had to “tweak” Alonso’s ear earlier this year amid a spate of critical remarks, but Domenicali said that he can understand the frustration.

“His frustration is our frustration,” he said.

“If you are not able to give a good car or a fast enough car to a driver who is always fighting like hell, it is very important that we focus on how we develop the car in the future,” the Italian added. (GMM)

F1 fans give Luca Di Montezemelo 1/10 for the way he has run the Ferrari team and Domenicali 0/10 for his management

  • captain tortuga

What he says about that aero-part is very true, and as long as aero is so utterly important the team in possession of Newey has just a straight advantage. Hopefully soon someone will rise to the challenge of being as good or better than Newey, .. that would be a relief ;)

  • F1 MAD

if Alonso gets an 8 then Domenicali should go back to Karting . What the heck do they see in him anyway ?
As for Montezemolo’s comment on aerodynamics ,no one can convince me that a team that spends 1/2 a Billion $/year can’t go out and get the best aerodynamicist in the world !! or accept that it should change its name to Formula Newey

  • Spartacus

Seems that LdM isn’t entirely satisfied with his No. 1 driver. I’m fairly certain that the car is good; until they gave up and started concentrating on 2014 it was very competitive.

Hopefully Ferrari will fair better with Kimi.

  • princess of the asturias

Alonso: “Red Bull has a one second advantage”. This is an astonishingly precise assumption. Alonso should become a race engineer in his next life – or even better: a clairvoyant.

He still thinks to be the fastest in the grid. Time for Kimi to bring him to the ground again.

  • Tinto

That does not seem a compliment, add to that parents are mild with their kids. It rather sounds a seven. Both parts have made regrettable mistakes, Ferrari most.

  • MacStar

8/10 for finishing 2nd in the championship riding a donkey? He’s outperformed that Ferrari car this season. Alonso will show his true worth vs Raikonnen.

  • Harys

If it wasn’t for the tire change, Alonso would most probably be leading the championship this year. Ferrari had a great car at the start of the season….competitive enough that only needs a driver like Alonso to win races….shame on you Pirelli & shame on you FIA for killing the thrill of the sport because of favoritism.

Unless the car is great enough next year, otherwise Kimi will barely out performs Massa’s current performance. He is not interested in a mediocre car. If the car is good, Alonso & kimi together will put on a great show.
Its hard to argue who is better when it comes to Alonso or Kimi, but surly Alonso is stronger & by far more serious. I admire both.

  • Texas Roadhouse

More like a good 9/10 for putting the car higher than it deserved. The car was good in the first half of the season until the tyre construction was changed. The team should get a 3/10 for not being able to overcome this, and not keeping pace with developments through the year.

  • dcloudy777

Alonso has taken two pretty average cars to within one tire rule change and one Romain Grosjean brain fade of back to back drivers’ titles.
Now for next year Ferrari will have not one but two of the top drivers… if they can’t win, maybe they should stick to road cars.

  • Red Bull Cheats

You Alonso haters forget that 2 times in the last 4 years Alonso was a few points away from WDC, not running last. He has been the only driver to challenge Vettel in the last 3 years. But that is still not good enough for you haters. No one has been better than Alonso the last 4 years, given the 1 second car advantage that Red Bull have enjoyed for most of those 4 years.

  • fools

and Ferrari get 2 out of 10.

Make me a better faster car to match Vettel please.

WDC would be in the bag… lets go!

Alonso for the 2014 Turbo Era!

  • Red Horizon

Montezemolo has achieved important results as a Ferrari president from both the sporting point of view and from the company (in fact, many forget that Ferrari is not just a racing team but also a company) including 14 world titles won more other near misses, the best known brand in the world, record sales and profits … He can be obnoxious and sometimes make mistakes, but those who speak evil, it’s more out of ignorance than anything else. He loves Ferrari and brought it back to the top after many years of crisis and he also knows what he does and when this year has rightly rebuked Alonso did simply what any good president would have done. However, in recent years, Ferrari has not won for just a bit of bad luck and because it was not able to correctly interpret the regulatory changes introduced in 2009. But Ferrari will certainly come back to win, just wait, we are patient …

“If you are not able to give a good car or a fast enough car to a driver who is always fighting like hell, it is very important that we focus on how we develop the car in the future,”

Preach! Ferrari lets do it then..Alonso is awaiting

  • Butterfly

It would be nice for the 2014 Ferrari to be even worse than the F138 and then they can give Fernando 4/10 and blame it all on him after securint 2nd in the WDC for the fourth time in five years.

Then, they could then say what’s really needed to return to winning championship is Vettel and so they could pay Fernando to leave and make way for the German.

Montezemolo is capable of such acts, I have no doubt. He thinks he’s a skilled politician, but he’s actually just pathetic.

…giving the guy that grabbed 2nd in the WDC with the 5th fastest car on the grid 8/10. Well, Luca, how much do you give your precious Ferrari? I would say a big fat zero would do.

  • sebolonso

Argument Alonso almost won wdc 2010 and 2012 is absurd. He lost it twice and it was not the car, it was the driver giving it away.

Replay was seen again this season in the first races. He spoiled his wdc chances once again on track. What a loser.

Luca gives his compliments only to keep Santander happy. After all Alonso is their pay driver. Luca doesn’t actually care if Alonso stays or goes, as long as money keep coming in.

Next Year Kimi will wipe the floor with Princess of Asturias. Shell pays for it. Enjoy.

  • Tinto

@Butterfly: Three times in the last 5 years, not four times. 2009-2013. 2009 was Vettel’s that missed it due 3 DNF against Buuton one. Then Alonso missed another second in 2011 if I am not wrong

  • Butterfly

    Tinto:

I said fourth time in five years *AFTER* securing 2nd at the end of 2014, so I made no mistakes.

Right now, he got 2nd place for the third time in the last four years, and it will be fourth time in five years at the end of 2014.

  • Alonso_is_Slow

loosing out to Massa so many time definitely questons his skills – without that he would have won the title last year, it surely cost him more than 3 points.

Raikkonen will make him look even weaker.

1-2 years and he is gone, and Vettel will take over his place.

This is the beginning of the end.

  • Carbonated

What an insult!! Please leave Alonso! They are going to be losers for years to come. They can’t even design a working wind tunnel (over several years) – they are using Toyotas old one – What a joke!!

They also quit developing cars mid year for the last 4 years to focus on the next year since their design sucks so bad. And I don’t want to hear about Pirrelli screwing them up – other teams adapted better than them.

    8 out of 10 my @$$

  • jl

WHAAATTT?? only 8? Alonso should get 6 out of 10.
    Too much overrated from LdM.

  • AlonsoFan

how many driving errors he has comitted this year? The only that I can think of is Malaysia 2013 ..otherwise none. And his DRS was given the thumbs up after it was forced back into its position gy the team..pathetic LDM..

  • AlsoRan

    8 out of 10?
He should be getting 11/10 given the POS car he was given.

  • Kshitij

Ferrari should bring back the man who beat Adrian Newey and that is Rory Byren. Now, he is the person who can challenge Newey.

As Alonso said in past that he is not racing against Vettel he is racing against Newey, then it is better to bring Byren back

  • F1 MAD

Vettel is a great guy but Alonso is in a different league by the admittance of all his ex-teammates . 2:1 he will take Kimi back to school next year. Not taking anything away from Kimi but it takes more than raw talent to be in the league of super greats .

  • Harys

It amazing how responses to articles about Alonso are most of the time filed with haters struggling to prove what is not correct, illogical & always in denial even when everything works well for him. I pity them.

Luca….here is a slap for you…I give Ferrari 4 out of 10 as an average of the last 5 years performance….Even your Ferrari trained technichians at many Ferrari garages to fix road cars are below average…My Nissan GT-R is way better than my 458…stop dreaming.

  • Daniel Ordaz C

What a contradiction spoken by the same guy who kept Massa 3 seasons to long and fsiled to hire Checo Perez for this one.
