Vettel: If Newey goes boating, he will come back with a huge sunburn, which is not right

Sebastian Vettel has urged the designer of his dominant Red Bull cars, Adrian Newey, to forget about switching to the world of competitive yachting.

Before meeting with British sailor Sir Ben Ainslie in Abu Dhabi last weekend, Briton Newey admitted that he was interested in getting involved with designing an America’s Cup boat.

“I can’t imagine him doing that,” new quadruple World Champion Vettel told Austria’s Servus TV. “I’ve never seen him go boating – he loves driving and has a lot of fun doing it.”

“If he goes boating, he will always come back with a huge sunburn, which is not right,” Vettel joked.

Vettel might have delivered the comments in jest, but the message was dead serious – Newey plays a crucial role in Red Bull’s success.

“Maybe someday,” Newey answered when asked if the America’s Cup is in his plans, “but not in the near future.”

He told Servus TV that the all-new rules for 2014 could shake up the pecking order in Formula 1.

But the team’s Helmut Marko is much more confident.

“We have Adrian Newey!” he exclaimed. “Whenever there is a change of rules, his cars are unbeatable.”

Newey plus excellent steerer is an unbeatable combo. Kimi was the only number one driver of a newey design not to take a wdcc.

    Ahem, 2009 … anyone?

There was a pretty long stretch where Newey cars were either dogs driven by great drivers or great cars driven by dogs. Obviously it is not just his design that makes the RB9 so good.

If Sebastian is a fierce competitor, he will welcome the chance to win without Newey. Maybe he can, maybe he can’t, nobody can know, but I do think it would be good for F1, and ultimately good for Vettel, to find out.
As for Newey… I don’t see why he stays, honestly. What in the world does he have left to prove?

alonsoisslow, if that unreliable shitbox hadn’t broken down race after race Kimi was also a 3/4 time champion with Shumi having less than 7, that’s for sure. I hope reliability (overheating, too much wear on parts) will slow them down next year. Newey’s cars are fast but not that reliable, certainly with the new engines. But the craziest thing is that if Renault decides to become a works team again (if “Lotus” goes bankrupt) Red Bull will be doomed to build their own engine or go to Cosworth or maybe search another manufacturer. Certain is that Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda will not give them one. So it’s not only Newey and Vettel who runs the show, the Renault engine is verry reliable. Also Red Bull pushing to put Infinity on the engine instead of Renault has not been well received by Carlos Gohn CEO of Renault. Even if it is a sister company they drive Renault engines, so does the Infinity roadcars even with the badge. Same in the Alfa 8C, it is a Ferrari F430 engine (as is Maserati). But Ferrari does not run on a Fiat engine though as some jokers suggest. Audi R8 (Lamborghini engine with an Audi badge).

Newey, the reason for Vettel’s success.

Nice to see a driver truly appreciate the gift of a car he has been given.

It would be good be for formula one, if Vettel had a less dominant car. It would cement his reputation, too.

  • aberracus

He knows, without daddy Newey he is one more of the grid.

  • Ukwhite

Only in your dreams. Funny thing, no change for the next years, enjoy your ‘rightness’

I fear u may be correct.
