An angry Fernando Alonso has hit out at persistent questioning about his relationship with Ferrari and declared that everything between himself and his team is “perfect” and will remain so into the future.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo’s public criticism of his number one driver earlier this year focussed many eyes on politics within the Maranello-based team.

In the wake of that brief furore, rivals McLaren made it clear they were ready to offer Alonso a seat for 2014 if he chose to leave the Italian team.

However, when asked about his position, and relations at Ferrari on Thursday, Alonso said that he was fed up with such questions.

“It is fantastic,” he said. “Every weekend I repeat the same thing – so, I guess, in Austin on Thursday, the first question will be how is my relationship with the team…

“It was perfect, it is perfect and it will be perfect.”

His irony was lost amid a flurry of reactions at a news conference ahead of this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Alonso joined Ferrari in 2010, but has had to suffer as four-time Champion Sebastian Vettel has dominated with Red Bull.

In both 2010 and 2012, he built up a points leads only to be overhauled by the record-setting German.

This year, he has been outclassed again by Vettel who has won every race since the European summer break on his way to a fourth consecutive title.

On his failed title bid, Alonso said: “I think we need to be realistic and know we didn’t have the chance this year to fight for the Championship.

“At the beginning of the year, we were a bit closer, but then not quick enough and now we’re fighting for other targets, which is second in the Constructors’ Championship and in the Drivers’.

“That was not the main priority when we started the season, but it’s a good target to achieve – and a good thing to help the team.” (AFP)
