In a remarkable turnaround of opinion, Lewis Hamilton hailed Formula 1 rival Sebastian Vettel as a great champion, only  a couple of days after suggesting the German’s dominance was sending fans to sleep.

The Mercedes driver told his 1.7 million followers on Twitter that he felt a need to clarify his thoughts about Red Bull’s runaway championship leader and winner of the last four races.

“Seb is great champion!!,” he declared on his feed (@LewisHamilton). “Not only that, he is a great human being who is funny and humble. Deserves all the success he is having.

“I admire his dedication & ability to consistently perform without mistakes. This is the mark of a true champion,” added the Briton, who won the 2008 title with McLaren before Vettel had won the first of his three to date.

Vettel, (who does not use Twitter) has a 77-point lead over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the championship with five races remaining and can clinch his fourth successive title in Japan this weekend.

“Regardless of what you & I may think about his car, at the end of the day he’s doing the perfect job,” continued Hamilton, whose earlier comments triggered a rash of newspaper headlines. “I’m just grateful I get to drive in an era with so many great drivers like him.”

The Briton had told reporters after finishing fifth in Sunday’s Korean Grand Prix won by Vettel that the 26-year-old’s dominance would have been a turnoff for some fans.

“Personally, I feel for the fans because I remember the period of time when Michael Schumacher was winning,” he had said.

“I remember waking up in the morning to watch the start of the race and then going to sleep, and then waking up when it ended because I already knew what would happen. I am pretty sure a lot of people were doing that today.”

Hamilton is no stranger to apologies and U-turns performed after Twitter gaffes.

Last year, he apologised to then-McLaren teammate Jenson Button after the Japanese Grand Prix for accusing him of disrespect by ‘unfollowing’ him only to find out that his compatriot never had followed him. (Reuters)

Damage control 101 right here – Obviously with 24 hrs of hindsight he has seen how bad he comes out of all of this. Most should see this as what it is and laugh at it. First of all, It doesn’t sound sincere at all. I wouldn’t be surprise if this statement didn’t come from Mercedes HQ.

Hamilton original statement flowed so freely you know that what he actually believes. This is nothing more than spin after the fact. First impressions are lasting ones.

  • Jules C

You must be an idiot to be stating the obvious on here…of course Hamilton is doing some damage control. And who are you to decide if it sounds sincere? The message is for Vettel and not for you dude! hahaha….are you Vettel or part of his ass??

And why is this even funny? Hamilton makes millions and he honestly doesn’t give a shit about your comments. If at all, he probably said the truth and Vettel is probably upset coz he still can’t get the recognition he should as a soon to be 4 time WDC.

  • Eevel_Empire

I don’t see why Hamilton should be seen as apologizing or making a u-turn.
In his first statement he said that Vettel winning everything was getting boring for the fans and in his later statement he said that Vettel is a great champion.
In what way do those statements oppose each other?
As far as I’m concerned both are true.
Having said that, I’m not one of the fans who gets bored of seeing one driver dominate.
Just as with the Schumacher era I feel we are privileged to witnes a master of their craft in action.

  • Hawk

you are blinded by your bias. Hamilton did not apologise, and he didnt turn around. he just clarified. what he feels about the person does not change the fact that he feels for the fans. what he meant is that even if it were him dominating like Seb or Schumi did, fans would nod off! for your information unlike other drivers ham is not a hypocrite. he never says what he does not mean. just like Alonso and Webber. he says what is on his heart and thinks later of the consequences. he can never be forced to say that Seb is a great champion. what he wont repeat is that he still believes that he and Alonso are better drivers which does not remove the fact that Seb is a great champion. simple..

  • Dan

last week he said vettel was 80% car, 20% driver. Now he saus he’s a champion? Is Vettel going to Mercedes in 2015 by any chance? Seems strange to suck up like tht.

  • Hawk

Stop lying. Hamilton has always maintained that its minimum 70% car for all cars/drivers

  • Boycottthebull

Fingerboy Humble? This is even more ridiculous than the comments your trying to blow over. The guy last week said you dont win cause your lazy hanging your balls out in the pool fridays! Great Human being yeah right, spoilt brats are great human beings now? F1 comments just get sillier and sillier. A 6ft man weighing 75kgs is fat now apparently!

  • Boycotthehaters

“he still believes that he and Alonso are better drivers”

He’s pretty stupid if he believes that. But in fairness to him he’s never said that, it’s his legion of demented fans who make that claim.

  • Tinto

This guy is &hit all over… His last verbal twist is a study case “I’m just grateful I get to drive in an era with so many great drivers like him.” The results tell a different story about who is really the great. Statement put on purpose to bring himself up, but, why not, more to bring Vettel down… Lewis’ greatness is on average a place between three and four in rankings since he joined F1.

Talking about Lewis’ great drivers, here you go a good definition of Formula one recently read: “Formula 1 is a sport the people play for a few hours and then the German wins”.

  • Boycotthehaters

So it’s not humble of Vettel to say “We win because we work harder”? You’d prefer he say “We win because I’m getting 150% out of the car, driving it faster than it’s capable of going”? (As some other drivers I could mention like to say about themselves)

  • EazyE

Why does Hamilton’s car have two mirrors?

    One for each face! :P

  • Tinto

Some words from experts for Lewis and all hamiltons (common noun for all of Seb’s tenacious Lewis like detractors)…

‘…We’re so often reminded that Formula One is a team game. Indeed, would Vettel even be setting such significant milestones without the brilliance of Newey masterminding arguably the finest art of his impressive career in the background? Probably not.

Yet Vettel is the one delivering on the race track. It is he who is the conductor of this wonderful choir. And it is his victories, his pole positions and his stunning consistency which has propelled Red Bull to such dizzy heights…’

  • Tamburello_1994

    Hey Jules –

    U mad bro?

  • Tinto

Who the heck is lewis hamilton to challenge the mighty Vettel?

He won a championship in 2008 by one point only! He is the ONLY winner in the last ~27 years that had less podium wins (1st place) than the runner up (one less than Massa). Amazing on a shine and rain day in the last race he was beaten by Vettel in Toro Roso that passed him on the last laps. Only luck saved Lewis – a mediocre champion – when Trulli lost speed and was passed by Lewis. This guy is full of …everything, but talent.

  • Tamburello_1994

. . . . .Might have to respectfully disagree with you on the “everything but talent” comment, Tinto. Whether he’s a likable guy or not is a matter of opinion, But Hamilton got mad skillz to be sure.

No one can say Lewis hasn’t driven the wheels off the Mercedes this season – when the consensus was he was gonna fall flat on his face. For a bit this season it looked like Lewis was gonna give Seb a run for his money. He hasn’t been at Merc a full season and he’s doing better statically than the guy who’s been there for a couple.

That shows some level of talent.

I would agree that he should have more WDC’s than the one that he has, And I think that gets to him as he sees Vettel just ring four off like he’s ordering lunch. That said, I wouldn’t count Lewis out yet getting another WDC or two before he hangs them up.

But just as Vettel deserves his accolades, So does Lewis.

  • Rey Rodrigo Sanchez

Hamilton is like a camillion, he can be red, blue, yellow, he adopt his surroundings…it means…his a double face.

  • Adriana

@ Tinto , wasn’t Trulli was Timo Glock , that why his championship was a glocky one , and what Lewis should do is just to shut the f… up , every time that he opens his mouth , look more stupid than it already is .

  • Adriana

Hamilton should know that arrogance is the manifestation of weakness, secret fear into rivals

  • Tinto

@Adriana: Nice, thanks :) You are correct, that was Timo, the guy that made things glocky for Lewis :)

@Tamburello_1994: Ok, I am fine with your comments, thank you but I would not give him too much credit, a very lucky guy in his career… I dislike Alonso for a few character issues, but I do admire him for his tenacity and fighting spirit. He is a racer. Lewis? Nope, he is not a true respectable racer for me. A gum bubble, worthless for a team. I would rather take Hulk and Grosjean.

  • Adriana

@ tinto , I couldn’t agree more with you about the ” top caliber drivers “

  • Boycotthehaters

Alonso has been a much luckier driver in his career than Vettel has, he has inherited many of his wins when other peoples cars have broken down.
