Bad blood between Adrian Sutil and Lewis Hamilton appears to have spilled on to the track as the two tangled during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.
Hamilton, at high speed in his Mercedes, came upon the slowing Force India as he entered Parabolica which scuppered his hot lap. As a result he clocked only the 12th best time in Q2, the first time he has been out of the top ten in qualifying since Malaysia in 2010.
Race stewards deemed “that the impeding was not intentional however it is the responsibility of the driver to be aware of the approaching car” and gave Sutil three place drop on the grid as a penalty, which relegated him to 17th place slot for the start of the race at Monza.
Asked if he felt that Sutil had impeded him, Hamilton said, “Yep, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I should have done a lap before that. I just didn’t drive well. There’s not really much more to say. I was quick in Q1 and then I dunno. I’ll do whatever I can from where I am but it’s going to be tough.” (GP247)
