Alonso: Gap to Vettel is beginning to be a bit too much in terms of points

Fernando Alonso wary of the ground he needs to make up in the title race

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has admitted he needs to start making up ground on runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel as the Formula 1 circus heads to Hungary.

Having won two grands prix so far in 2013 compared to reigning triple world champion Vettel’s four, Spaniard Alonso said Ferrari is working “day and night” to recover lost time in the car development race.

“We must try to finish ahead of Vettel,” Ferrari’s Alonso told Italian television TG1 ahead of this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

The last race before the summer break and factory shutdowns, Budapest marks the half-way point of the 2013 championship.

Fernando Alonso has won twice so far this season

German Vettel, driving for Red Bull, has a 34-point lead over Alonso with ten races to go.

Alonso admitted: “The gap to Vettel is beginning to be a bit too much in terms of points. We have to reduce this gap as soon as possible.”

Having recently watered down his anti-Vettel rhetoric, Alonso this week insisted that the 26-year-old German has a clear car advantage again in 2013.

“Any driver who goes into the Red Bull manages to go very strongly,” he said.

“We saw that in the tests for young drivers (at Silverstone),” Alonso added, referring to tests last week for Antonio Felix da Costa, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz jr.

“Whoever goes into the Red Bull is very fast – it is a fact that [the car] is stronger than the others,” said Alonso. (GMM)

. . . “Any driver who goes into the Red Bull manages to go very strongly,”

    Keep deluding yourself Fernando.

Why even bother competing? Might as well hand over the trophies before the first race if it’s a foregone conclusion.

    M. Webber is 5th in points last time I checked. Guess he didn’t get that memo.

The bottom line is Ferrari is still getting their asses handed to them by an energy drinks team.

Tamb, you said it better than myself. Alonso keeps making noises. He should just shut up and drive.

Baby Schu sticking him where he should be

  • Spartacus

There’s still a load of points there to be had and Ferrari’s technical abilities is awesome. They’ve produced the best race car for Alonso and handed championship after championship to him on a plate yet he’s dined elsewhere.

It’s time for Ferrari to admit and accept their mistake and find an altenative driver.

Replacing Kimi with this Santander pay driver is the most stupid decision ever in the history of Maranellos.

  • =El Presidente=

The Era of RedBull will end, and my best guess is 2015.

For sure Alonso has a point, a very true point, but i said it before, and i’ll do it again, it is the car that makes the difference.

Dont come with excuses like “webber has the same car” because we all know that is not true by a long shot.
Massa also does not have the same equipment as Alonso does, and Romain does not race exactly the same specs as Kimi.

Vettel’s car is the best out there. no doubt about that. But on the other hand drivers should not complain because thats the way it has always been.

I remember when i started karting (nothing serious) we would quite literally smash each others heads in to just get the number X kart haha just to have that little edge.

So in motor-racing it is most of the times a matter of having the fastest equipment.

In Formula it is also about the fastest car, though the means to get that edge are very often tainted with corruption and politics.

Nowadays i just watch F1 for the cars.. because they are still very violent machines.. but the championship.. my ass.. thats just as rigged as the WC football.

Everyone who thinks Formula 1 is an honest sport, with sportsman-like behavior is pretty naive.
If you want to see pure racing try to find Superkart-Euroseries on youtube. or world series for that matter.. anyway.. those guys make awesome speeds (up to 250km/h) and are a lot closer to the real racing hero’s of the old days.

What a joke – both Sainz and Ricciardo did faster times in the Toro Rosso than they in the Red Bull!

    @tamburello

I lmaoed with “M. Webber is 5th in points last time I checked. Guess he didn’t get that memo.”

  • fools

now people are upset when Alonso speaks the truth? SMH

  • Butterfly

    fools:

At least everybody talks about Fernando. That’s good, mate. :-)

Not even in the Schumacher era were people talking so much about one driver. Heck, not even Senna had this.

  • Tamburello_1994

“Heck, not even Senna had this.”

Internet in it’s current form might have something to do with that, rag-a-muffen.

“Not even in the Schumacher era were people talking so much about one driver.”

People don’t keep talking about Alonso. They talk about Vettel, Hamilton, Raikkonen, etc just as much.

  • visz963

Alonso thereby admits himsefl that he cannot win without the best car. So what is his role? Paid $30m per year to ask for the fastest car?

What a joke this guy is. Complete fail.

  • Ukwhite

Well said Tamburello, smart and joyful reading comments.

Alonso only likes to play mind games! Duh!

    10 days ago he said,
“I said in the second half of the year (2012) that I was not any more fighting against Sebastian or Mark , but against an aeroplane – so strong was the Red Bull.
“Maybe some people misunderstood; I was simply trying to say that it’s hard to fight against the car that can potentially be first and second in every race.”
“This year it’s no longer the case. Sebastian is ahead because he does the best job,” Ferrari’s Alonso added.

Now again he says the IRBR’s car is superior.. For God’s sake stop crying over it like small kid and get up with your ’200 times better car than the following year’s F12′! Atleast that car could sum up podiums!:p

  • Szilard

    @visz963
Alonso himself said, that he doesn’t need the fastest car, only one that is within half a second of Vettel’s. And of course he wants a good car. He is the best driver in F1, and his championships are being wasted by an incompetent team at Ferrari. I can only admire how he can manage his frustration and anger… But good times will come. It’s the balance of nature :D
