Perez: You don’t win races when you’re a second slower than everyone 25 June, 2013 Sergio Perez feels he has grown at McLaren McLaren must not lose another whole season by bungling the development of its next car, new team driver Sergio Perez has warned, as he and teammate Jenson Button struggle with a car which he claims is “a second off the pace”. The young Mexican joined the Woking based team this year, just as it launched the uncompetitive MP4-28. Despite calls that it would be the most sensible solution, McLaren has so far refused to write off the current car in order to focus on the all-new rules of 2014. Asked how far McLaren is from winning a race in 2013, Perez answered: “I think far away. “We need to make major improvements; breakthroughs. We are currently one second per lap slower,” he is quoted by Brazil’s Totalrace. “You don’t win races when you’re a second slower than everyone else.” Perez suggested the time might be coming when McLaren must draw a line under the MP4-28 and begin to ensure that its 2014 car is not similarly poor. Sergio Perez during the Canadian GP “We have to give our best for the next couple of months, but at some point we’ll have to focus on the 2014 car,” he said. “We can’t risk losing another year.” In terms of his development as an F1 driver, however, Perez admitted that 2013 has not been a totally ‘lost’ year. “I think I’m happy,” he said, “because I’ve learned a lot, and grown a lot as a driver. Even though I have half the points that I had last year, I’m in a better position as a driver.” “When I came here with such a different car I realised that, compared to Jenson Button, I was not good enough,” he is quoted by EFE news agency. “So I had to learn about that and work at it. Now I’m driving very differently to how I was at Sauber.” (GMM) Subbed by AJN. That just can’t be avoided. Without Lewis, Button isn’t as quick either. As likeable as the drivers are they’re simply not getting the best out of the McLaren car. Butterfly Excuse me, but which are these likeable drivers you speak of? the fan the simplest indication that perez is not a good driver… ever heard of Fernando Alonso and Ferrari last year? he was almost a second and a half off the Red Bulls but manages to win 3 races if im not mistaken and ended up 2nd adrift of the WDC Spartacus Alonso had for many races last year the fastest car on the grid. Yet when Massa was given freedom to show his speed, only ever in qualifying, he was on many occasions able to beat Alonso. Generally he’s very similar in times. Alonso isn’t a bad driver, but he’s nowhere near a great driver either. Long time fan I feel like I have read these Alonso arguments 1000 times before. Oh wait. I have. It would be very easy to write this season off for Mclaren and focus all energy on the 2014 car. Here’s hoping they keep fighting this year and get that Mclaren on the podium once again. Henk @ Spartacus: We’ve heard that argument incessantly, but it doesn’t cut it. The Ferrari was the quickest in Germany and Silverstone, which is far from ‘most’ of the races. And there Alonso finished 1rd and 2nd. It seems he got most out of the car when he had it, and he managed to get most when his car was more than a second behind. Massa’s qualifying speed is not an argument either. It is a strategic choice to have the maximum one-lap speed setup for the car out of contention and the max race pace setup for the car in it. Butterfly Henk: Quickest in the wet – there, I solved it for you. The car was eating its tires which made it good for pole in the wet. Of course, all that worked because Alonso’s car control. Massa used to crash it every chance he got, it was horrible to control. Why can’t some of you people understand that F1 is a technical sport? Is that all you can come up with, “he had the fastest car in Germany and Britain”? It’s *much* more technical than that. However, there are two invariants in Formula One right now: Vettel always has the quickest car in all conditions and Fernando is the best driver on the grid. Spartacus @Butterfly Do people take you serious when you still believe that Alonso is the best driver on the grid? Surely you’re just trolling? Butterfly 2.0 Fernando is the best driver on the grid. Finger boy only wins because he’s got the fastest car. Don’t you understand this is a technical sport where the car makes all the difference? fools OMG! Why does every other article here become anti Alonso! If Alonso had the fastest car he would of won. 2 DNF’s doesnt help that. Yes he lost the WDC and everyone knows even haters/trolls know he ALONSO would of wont the WDC last yr. He lost by 3 points with a slow crap car. Wtf DOES THAT TELL TO THE OBVIOUS TROLL? It means he can deliver! ALONSO FOR THE 2013 WDC! fools Spartacus is a TROLL. Never seen him before. He is anti Alonso and is very F1 ignorant. That is all. Butterfly Spartacus: Fernando has proven time and again he’s the best and I don’t need a socker fan like yourself to tell me what to look for when watching an F1 race. Maybe this sport isn’t for you. Butterfly 2.0 @Butterfly “socker fan” Which game would that be? If you’re going to insult someone at least have the decency to pick a sport that does exist. I have to agree with you that Alonso is the best driver there’s ever been. Better than Fangio. Better than Schumacher. Better than Senna. He could drive a shopping cart round a circuit faster than any other driver. iMark yalla had enough with 1 butterfly retarded alonso fan, now 2? or the same with 2 names? dammm… some girl needs to get a life soon. Hawk I think Butterfly 2.0 need to get their moniker. this is not a dynasty. and their comment styles are so different. Butterfly 2.0, you being a fan of the Butterfly should not stop you from getting yourself another moniker. I suggest one for you… MOTH.. the fan i feel sorry for martin whitmarsh for the way his 2 drivers are speaking. its like all hope is gone for them. Butterfly Hawk & iMark, you’re just saying that because you’re Alonso haters. Butterfly “you’re just saying that because you’re Alonso haters.” – not my post, but you are Alonso haters. Spartacus @Butterfly. Are you sure you’re allowed out of the clinic? Serious case of bi-polar disorder. Alonso is a good driver, but far from the best. Only when the Ferrari has the fastest race car can he win. Or when others fail. Sort of sweeping up, not cleaning up.
