Lauda: There was no rule violation, we got a warning, not even a yellow card

Niki Lauda is adamant and insists that Mercedes was not found ‘guilty’ of breaking the rules by the recent FIA tribunal in Paris.

The German team has been banned from the forthcoming young drivers test at Silverstone, and was officially reprimanded for running its 2013 car and race drivers in a secret test with Pirelli at Barcelona last month.

“There was no rule violation,” triple world champion Lauda, the Brackley based team’s chairman and a co-owner, told Austrian broadcaster ORF.

“We got a warning, not even a yellow card which could lead to a red card. We were excluded from the young driver test, which is a judgement that we can live with absolutely.”

Lauda said that the international tribunal made its verdict with the ‘sport’ – as opposed to the political intrigue that has filled the headlines in the past days – in mind.

“All the intrigue and the stories were not fair, because everything was done correctly in the sense of how we came to do this test,” he insisted.

Lauda therefore slammed those who were heavily critical of Mercedes’ behaviour, like Red Bull who reportedly wanted a $100 million fine and hefty points deductions for Mercedes.

“Red Bull went with this story very aggressively,” he said, “interpreting everything that could be interpreted into it”.

“The paddock is a snake pit but the FIA tribunal is a court, which clearly decided that it was not a rule violation, but a different interpretation of various regulations.”

However, Lauda said that the outcome of the tyre-dominated situation in Formula 1 this year is that Pirelli is now unable to adjust its tyres.

“They wanted to bring new tyre [designs] to Montreal, and then they should have been in Silverstone, now they are not [able to bring new tyres].

“So if it gets really hot at Silverstone, which can sometimes happen, the problem with the many pitstops will likely continue,” he insisted.

“So I don’t understand this rule,” said Lauda, referring to the need for unanimity in the paddock before changes to the tyres can be made immediately.

“If Pirelli says we want to have a different tyre because it’s better for [Pirelli], for the cars, for everyone, then someone is always going to say no. So this rule is a disaster,” he charged. (GMM)

Nikki saying all this now, yet he had already tried to broker a deal with Bernie, to pay a large fine rather than face the tribunal? So he obviously did believe that Merc were at fault and had broken the rules.

  • Mercedes has been caught red handed cheating

No matter what Wolff, Lauda or Brawn say they were caught red handed cheating and they were found guilty for cheating.

Mercedes as a company has no ethics and as such Mercedes the company can never again be trusted by the public.

Mercedes can try and spin this all they want but people are not stupid and they know that Mercedes is not an honorable company. For Mercedes to try and pretend they did nothing wrong tells the entire world just how unethical Mercedes is.

Hang your head in shame Mercedes because Toto Wolff, Ross Brawn and even Niki Lauda have brought disgrace and shame up on Mercedes and for that Mercedes will forever be known as a company that will cheat and has no ethics.

The best and most honorable thing Mercedes can do now is issue an apology and drop out of Formula One for their cheating.

  • Don

Clearly you are not a follower of F1, caught red handed, there would not be F1 today if heavy penalies were handed down for cheating, in the last ten years every top team has been caught red handed with the majority of offences not even penalized but don’t take my word on this, go and look for your self before you judge again

  • Merc are Cheaters

Lauda in denial. The verdict was: Mercedes broke the regulations and benefited from it.

You cheated, you got caught cheating and you got punished for cheating. The punishment was light because Mercedes was blackmailing how they would leave F1 if they got a heavy punishment.

  • FIA is a toothless tiger

The FIA has made Formula One a total joke, they are a toothless tiger.

They should have called Mercedes bluff to leave and hit them hard for their blatant cheating.

Formula One is far bigger than anyone team and yes that includes you Mercedes and yes that even includes Ferrari.

The FIA has failed time and time again. It is time the remove the FIA.

Revisionist history in the making! Merc is in full force with Brawn and Lauda attempting to make it appear as they had won the case against them, that nothing happened, that it was all a miss-understanding… whatever. They violated the regulations, thus were sanctioned for it, can’t change reality with a barrage of denials and press releases.
