Newly appointed Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff is part of the ‘new wave’ that has taken over at the helm of the Silver Arrows team and he is under no illusions about the task ahead for the team to claim a berth among the elite Formula 1 outfits.

The launch of the Mercedes W04 at Jerez today was a special occasion for Wolff as it the first F1 car to break cover under his tenure and he admitted as much, “The first laps for a new car are always filled with emotion and today was no exception.”

“It is even more meaningful when the car is a Silver Arrow: Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition of racing success and this is something we are proud to represent and determined to live up to,” added the Austrian who along with triple world champion Niki Lauda are newcomers to the team at senior management level.

“In the fortnight since I joined the team, I have been impressed by what I have found. The people are highly motivated, open-minded and determined to succeed. Our drivers are hungry for success, too, and it will certainly be fascinating this season to see how Nico and Lewis perform together,” mused Wolff.

But concluded, “Ultimately, though, Formula One is very straightforward and the only thing that counts is lap time.”

No, I’m pretty sure reliability was one of the biggest problems Mercedes faced last year. Speed counts for nothing, if you don’t finish the race.

“To finish first, you must first finish. ” – Sterling Moss.
I think I got the quote right. either way the point is valid.

Wolff has actually said the exact same before working for another team.. (the laptime comment)

What matters is the lap times of you and everybody else. Makes no difference that your car is faster than your previous car if everybody else made bigger steps forward.

    What a load of PR-BS.

I was expecting a better-looking Merc to be honest, but that thing they “launched” is just awful-looking everywhere.

It’s going to be a long year for the Germans…

Give me a super quick car and I will make it reliable.
    Give me a reliable car and……. I will have a reliable car……
