Van der Garde’s hopes of Caterham deal shrink

Giedo van der GardeJan.2 (GMM) Dutchman Giedo van der Garde’s hopes of finally breaking into Formula One in 2013 have diminished, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The now 27-year-old flirted with a move to F1 several years ago with brief test roles at Super Aguri and Spyker, and while racing for Caterham’s GP2 team in 2012 he finished the F1 season as reserve driver for the green-coloured outfit.

With sponsor backing, the Dutchman was a leading candidate to be Charles Pic’s 2012 teammate.

Van der Garde’s new year has kicked off on a happy note with his engagement to his girlfriend, but De Telegraaf is reporting that Caterham incumbent Vitaly Petrov is now the hot favourite to complete the team’s 2013 race lineup.

Van der Garde’s manager Jan Paul ten Hoopen, however, said that nothing has been decided.

Heikki Kovalainen has earned you millions of money by securing the 10th place for 2 years.

Petrov only did in the third year and was slightly equal to Kovalainen in some races because the car was built/upgraded so poorly being undrivable for Heikki’s style. (-> front tyre temperature is a key for precision racing)

No way Petrov (and other remaining drivers including Sutil) even had a chance against Heikki if it wasn’t about money but driving ability.

Voted Top 10 Driver last year by the team executives.

Even smashed Lewis Hamilton in 2009/2010 on quite a few qualifying duels (if you’re including the fuel levels at that time)
    by up to a second,
despite being in a bad career shape during his stint at McLaren.
