Ecclestone F1 is my baby and I want to look after it

Dec 9 (Reuters) Michael Schumacher should have stayed in retirement rather than risked his reputation in a disappointing Formula One comeback with Mercedes, Bernie Ecclestone said while claiming Formula 1 is his baby and he wants to look after it despite reports that he may be on the way out.

“People new to the sport – people who have joined the F1 fan fraternity just recently – will remember Michael now, not as he was. They don’t see the hero that he was but the human that can fail,” added the 82-year-old.

Schumacher retired for the second time after finishing seventh in last month’s season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. In three years with Mercedes, he had only one podium finish and no wins to add to his record tally of 91.

The 43-year-old German had first retired in 2006, when he was with Ferrari and had won five titles in a row, to add to the two championships he won with Benetton in the 1990s.

Ecclestone’s opinion has done 180 degree turn since Schumacher started the British Grand Prix from third place, then the F1 chief executive told SID news agency: “He’s doing a good job; he’s third on the grid here – you can’t ask for much more. Why shouldn’t he stay another ten years. If it was up to me, he would stay forever.”

“I think the important thing is…to know when you can’t do what you used to do anymore and then hand it over to somebody else. I hope that’s what I can do: when I feel I can’t deliver, I will certainly say goodbye,” he said.

“Probably the bad thing with me is that I put in lots of effort to build Formula One the way it is now, so this is my baby and I want to look after it. Sooner or later we’re going to have to get a babysitter. When that will be, who knows? I am in very good shape.”

Ecclestone said that Formula One would continue to explore new frontiers, with Russia’s Sochi the next new race to be added to the calendar in 2014 now that a grand prix in New Jersey had been postponed for 2013.

“I suppose the next big thing will be Russia. Then we have to get this New York thing picking up again. There’s lots of unfinished business – no time to waste one thought[s] [of] retirement,” he said.

The Briton hailed the debut of a new race in Austin, Texas, this year as phenomenal and “perfectly prepared” and sent a warning to European circuits that they needed to sharpen up their act.

“Maybe we’ll get the Europeans to wake up instead of thinking that [a Formula One race] is a God-given thing. When Europeans perform and do their job we are happy to stay,” he said.

    Oh God, now he wants to add another race to the calendar: Russia? I’d rather see them return to the Nurburgring (the old circuit), or even Brands Hatch. 20-21 races? Shoot, Bernie, you’re making it look like NASCAR. Enough already.

    The world’s economics are pushing back Bernie. You’ve already exhausted the Middle East’s money stream, you’ve penalized European circuits for years, and you think New Jersey is going to be in any kind of shape for a race..you haven’t been keeping up.
    Instead of just trying to blackmail new venues with your “fees”…why don’t you take a long look at some of tracks that matter..or did matter…and perhaps even partner with them in upgrading the facilities to allow F1 to return. Thank you for getting rid of that eyesore in Valencia..unfortunately, Korea wants nothing more to do with the show…face the harsh reality..build upon the past and quit looking for a way to extort unsuspecting politicians.

    I don’t get it, why does F1 really need to grow every year? Tumors grow like that, and nobody finds them particularly useful.

    A statement like “Europe is finished” or “Europe can’t afford anything” is just rubbish. How about they fix the rates for the next eight years – same as the Concorde – and stop bulying the circuits that don’t want to pay 100M for a goddamn grand-prix.

    It’s ridiculous. F1 isn’t worth that kind of money. Circuits never make profits, and the teams are gready as f*uck.
