Lauda makes a move to poach Newey from Red Bull claims Marko

(L to R): Adrian Newey (GBR) McLaren Technical Director chats with Former Jaguar Team Boss Niki Lauda (AUT) and Nav Sidhu (GBR) Jaguar PR Manager. Formula One World Championship, Rd4, San Marino Grand Prix, Imola, Italy, 18 April 2003. DIGITAL IMAGEOct.11 (GMM) Niki Lauda has already made a move to lure Adrian Newey away from Red Bull to Mercedes.

Austrian triple world champion Lauda, having negotiated Mercedes’ new Concorde Agreement and wooed Lewis Hamilton to the German squad, has also joined the team as non-executive chairman.

And according to Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko, “Herr Lauda has been looking into how long Adrian Newey still has a contract with us”, he is quoted by Bild newspaper.

The report said Briton Newey, Formula One’s most respected car designer and aerodynamicist who reportedly makes in the region of $10 million a year at Red Bull, is under contract until 2014.

“There is an existing contract to be complied with,” insisted Marko, who is team owner Dietrich Mateschitz’s right-hand man on F1 matters.

“And what would he [Newey] do at Mercedes anyway? With Ross Brawn there are three other technical directors. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians,” Marko insisted.

Austrian Marko said that Newey has not been Mercedes’ only target.

“They also wanted to have Vettel,” he claimed.

“…Too many chiefs and not enough Indians..” – I giggled.

I find it very amusing to listen to the wits of people whos first language is not English (Myself included). I wish I could’t speak French, so I would have more insight into why they structure their English as they do :)

ps. I know the saying Marko is referring to, just with all the things going on in the world I could not help my self, yes I’m bad :(

    enough indians?

  • adam.strongwell

mercedes should just buy redbull – much easier!

  • jan

What he means by saying”…. not enough Indians’ – i could not understand. JAN, India

  • Big Chief Red Bull

There is only one Mercedes technical director and he is Bob Bell. Aldo Costa heads up Aerodynamics and Geoff Willis heads up the Mechanical. These guys report to Bob Bell. Brawn is team boss and hasn’t been a technical director for many years. Marko needs to get his facts straight first.

JAN: the saying of too many chiefs and not enough indians is an old American saying from decades ago. It is still seen but rarely. It refers to when the Natives of North America were called Indians.
Christopher Columbus and all that business.
We’ll have lessons on the blankets with smallpox some other time.

Newey would be an idiot to jump ship, for any money. His cars are still performing very well. That means he’s top dog right where he’s at.

    interested in vettel?? hell no
    probably newey
without newey = no wdc for vettel

  • Hunt

The fact that Mercedes hired Lauda says it all… They are completely lost. Lauda failed at Ferrari and he’ll fail at Mercedes. Mercedes will never win a championship until they change their mindset and get one strong leader with a real vision and plan for the future. They need to dump Haug and Lauda and let Brawn steer the course. Mercedes are running around like headless chickens.

No Newey = No WDC for Hakkinen x 2
No Newey = No WDC for Mansell
No Newey = No 1st WDC for Prost
No Brawn = No WDC for Schumacher x 7
No Briatore = No WDC for Alonso x 2
No Murray = No WDC for Senna x 3
No Murray = No 2nd or 3rd WDC for Prost
And the list goes on and on…

So what? No WDCs have ever been won within a poorly run or technically inadequate team. The WDC is won in superior cars, driven by superior drivers – Vettel included, like it or not (most of the WDC winners above have been disliked at various times, so this is not novel). That’s what makes F1 a team sport, and why every move to turn it into a spec racer driver-centered activity devalues the it.

    @Disgusted with 2012
    NOPE NOT VETTEL
COMPARED TO PAST CHAMPIONS, HE’S JUST TOO LUCKY TO HAVE NEWEY
FELIPE PROBABLY DESERVES A BETTER CAR

I quit believing anything Marko said years ago.

In one sense, hiring Lauda for Mercedes is reasonable– Now Mercedes and Red Bull both have people speaking for them who have tenuous grips on reality.

  • Hunt

@Disgusted with 2012. Brawn didn’t design the Benetton or Ferrari for Schumacher. It was Rory Byrne.

  • fools

Alonso has never had Newey…and with that said…2 WDC and 3rd coming this yr.

Again, no Newey. Yet people talk bad about Alonso.smh… lol

    :)

Alonso for 2012 WDC on Pace!

  • Disgusted with 2012

Okay, if it was Byrne alone with Schumacher at Ferrari and Benetton, and Alonso wins in 2012, then is it Byrne at work as well, since he was involved in the creation of the F2012? Point remains exactly the same, if not advanced, as it shows the need for a car technically capable and driver to exploit its capabilities to win the WDC. Or, is it possible that the Ferrari’s 2012 weakness (and possible failure in 2012) is that it does not have the team of Brawn and Byrne on it, since the two seem to share success when paired, not so much when not, with the exception of the ’09 season for Brawn? Interesting…

Next Marko will be saying they tried to poach him and Horner

  • Barlow

If it helps. Too many “Chiefs not enough Indians”. Where a chief leads the band or tribe. The rest of the people follow his lead. Where there are all Chiefs making the decisions, and no people (Indians) to do the work, confusion prevails, and nothing gets done!!
