Jan.23 (GMM) F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has admitted he is hoping Sebastian Vettel’s rivals break the double world champion’s run of dominance this season.

Bernie Ecclestone not too keen on too many Red Bull celebrations in 2012

Ecclestone is an avowed fan and friend of the 24-year-old Red Bull driver, but for the sake of the sport he wants the German to be chased down in 2012 after two consecutive successful championship campaigns.

Asked by Salzburger Nachrichten at the Kitzuhel skiing event if Vettel will dominate this season, the 81-year-old laughed: “I hope not!

“Of course, Red Bull are still going to be there. I would much prefer a fight for the world title right to the end of the season.”

But if Vettel does dominate again, Ecclestone said the most important thing is that the individual races are exciting.

“The TV viewers care more about the tension of the race than the championship,” he insisted.

It is very possible that Red Bull designer Adrian Newey has penned yet another field-beater, so in that case Ecclestone will be cheering for Vettel’s teammate, Australian Mark Webber.

Bernie Ecclestone and the current superstars of Formula 1 (minus Kimi Raikkonen)

“I don’t want Red Bull to dominate in the same way but I fear that’s what will happen. That’s why I put my hopes on Mark Webber’s shoulders.

“This year we will see a situation where he can show his talent much more,” said the Briton.

Ecclestone is also crossing his fingers for Red Bull’s rival teams.

“I would be surprised if Mercedes don’t win a race this year. As for Ferrari, I can only hope they improve significantly.

“Alonso is super-talented and deserves a perfect car,” he said.

And as for the occupant of the other Ferrari, 1964 world champion John Surtees said the pressure is on the team’s Brazilian “weak link” Felipe Massa.

“He’ll either have to perform consistently well, or make way,” he told the Sun.

I would sub out M. Webber(?) For M. Schumacher to complete that “Current superstars of Formula 1″ photograph above.

    Michael deserves his due.

  • sami

the ”All time F1 megastar” M.Schumacher is nt appearing in the photo of’ ”current F1 superstars”

  • Stewy33

Hey! Mark Webber is an outstanding driver and deserves to be mentioned as he is in this article. I will remind you if Webber didn’t carsh out of Korea in 2010 Mark would of been world champion and not Vettel.

  • Tamburello_1994

    Stewy33, Be serious.

Giving M. Webber honorable mention is one thing, But to have a picture of F1’s active driver champions under the heading “the current superstars of Formula 1 (minus Kimi Raikkonen)” And not even mention the most successful driver in F1 history, is simply ridiculous.

Webber is decent, No doubt. But can he really be considered an “elite”?

I’m not the biggest M. Schumacher fan, But I do recognize his contributions to auto racing. Any discussion of the sports current “superstars” is incomplete without Schumacher.

A straw man argument coming from Stewy. How ironic!

  • Stewy33

I don’t think “straw man” would be appropriate as the information I posted was factual or miss leading.

I cant believe some people cry about the most random things
Personally i’d rather complain about Bernie being in that photo than Schumi not being part of it LOL
