Practice 2: Vettel fastest from Ferrari duo

Sebastian Vettel ended the first day at Monza fastest of all

Sep.10 (Grand Prix 247) Sebastian Vettel made a point earlier this week that he would not stop attacking. Well he attacked big time at Monza during the second free practice session on the opening day of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

Felipe Massa on the edge ending the day third fastest

The Red Bull driver ended the session quickest and gave everyone a scare with a hairy moment in the closing stages of the session at Lesmo which saw him go farming briefly before gathering it all together.

Behind the German were the Ferrari pair with extra pressure on home ground and in front of the demanding tifosi. Fernando Alonso ending the session second quickest, a mere 0.076 seconds off Vettel, with team mate Felipe Massa third on the timing screens. The Brazilian surviving a huge moment at the Parabolica which saw him save it before pounding the barrier. The boys were really trying….

The McLaren duo were up next with Lewis Hamilton fourth and Jenson Button fifth. The team were working on various options and really not focused on a big lap time, nevertheless they were right up there with the top guns.

Hamilton’s McLaren, was running without an F-duct in order to compare it with the downforce-stalling configuration on teammate Button’s car. With the F-duct, Button was mere hundredths slower than Hamilton in the afternoon.

Button observed, “Our car works very well in low downforce. We should be fighting at the front.”

Hamilton did some damage to a front wing around the hour mark thanks to some kerb hopping.

Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) ended sixth best but with about 20 minutes to go in the session parked the RB6 on the exit of Lesmo with what appeared to be a water pressure problem.

Michael Schumacher ended his first day back at Monza 14th fastest

Last year’s winner at Monza was Rubens Barrichello driving for Brawn GP, this year the veteran Brazilian is behind the wheel of a Williams and ended the final session on the first day seventh fastest.

Renault’s Robert Kubica was eighth fastest but tellingly the top eight were within one second, in facts 0.870 seconds separated them.

Fastest rookie was Nico Hulkenberg (Williams) who set the ninth best time with Nico Rosberg (Mercedes GP) rounding out the top ten.

Up  next were the Force India pair of Adrian Sutil and Vitanatonio Liuzzi 11th and 12th best respectively.

Michael Schumacher who has won Fromula 1 races at Monza more times than any other driver was toiling, only managing 14th fastest time in the session.
