Ecclestone: “Schumi will win championship” 27 December, 2009 Bernie Ecclestone and Michael Schumacher in 2003 Dec. 27 (YF1) Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is over the moon that Michael Schmaucher is returning to the sport with Mercedes GP starting in 2010. No doubt he will be smiling as F1 TV ratings are likely to go through the roof. Ecclestone believes that Schumacher is capable of not only winning but actually vying for the title. He told mirror.co.uk, “Forget about winning races, I have him on my bill for winning the championship,” said Ecclestone. “He will be of immense value for the team to push the development of the car.” The billionaire goes on to recall how Schumacher galvanised teams he raced for in the past to produce the best cars, “We have all seen in the past that he was never satisfied unless the car was in perfect condition. With his drive for the optimum and his deep technical understanding, he will save the team precious time.” Ecclestone knows the value of Schumacher returing to the sport at the age of 41 to take on the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel (who have never raced against the seven times world champion) while renewing rivalries with the likes of Fernando Alonso, Rubens Barrichello and 2009 World Champion Jenson Button. “All the indications point to a jaw-dropping season. I think it is fantastic for Formula 1 that Schumacher turned into a comeback kid. But at the same time I also think it’s good for Michael,” concluded Ecclestone.
